Karate is a martial art that strengthens
mental resilience and focus,
helping you to reflect on yourself.

At our dojo, while mastering techniques is certainly important, our primary focus is on building mental resilience and concentration. Above all, we aim to help you face yourself so that you can confidently engage with others in any situation.

In today's world, we are constantly surrounded by digital environments. Whether at work with computers or in our personal lives with smartphones and televisions, we are continuously bombarded with vast amounts of information, both actively and passively. This has led to a growing concern about declining concentration levels. There are also times in life when we may feel weak or uncertain at crucial moments.

Karate training not only prepares you for self-defense but also lays a vital foundation for moving forward in life with confidence.

Shotokan Ohshima Dojo Japan

Our dojo is the Japan branch of the Shotokan Ohshima Dojo, which has expanded to 16 countries worldwide. We are guided by the teachings of Grand Master Tsutomu Ohshima, who was instrumental in bringing karate to America. Our organization is dedicated to pursuing karate as a true martial art. At our dojo, karate is not just about acquiring techniques. We strive to cultivate a state of mind that remains calm and composed in any situation, enabling our practitioners to handle anything that life throws at them. Our training is aimed at achieving the perfection of character.

Four key features of our dojo

Feature1

Karate as a martial art, not as a competitive sport

特徴1

Our dojo does not aim to win competitions. While participating in matches is certainly an important aspect of training, our goal is not to raise flags in the eyes of judges. Instead, our focus is on truly mastering karate as a martial art and prevailing in a confrontation in the most profound sense. To prevail in a confrontation does not simply mean landing a sharp punch or kick on an opponent. It is about the mindset and the inner domain of the heart. The ultimate goal of our karate training is to achieve freedom of expression, naturalness, and the realization of one's true self.

Feature2

Training tailored to each individual's level

Feature2"

Our dojo values tradition and practices karate with a focus on controlled techniques, emphasizing the concept of 'sun-dome' (pulling punches) to minimize the risk of serious injury. Additionally, our training is tailored to each individual's level. For instance, if a student is apprehensive about sparring ('kumite'), we may shift the focus to practicing forms ('kata'), allowing them to learn karate safely and at their own pace.

Feature3

Diverse and enriching relationships

特徴3

Our dojo is home to a diverse group of members, ranging in age from 15 to 90, and representing various nationalities and backgrounds. Through daily practice and sometimes challenging training sessions, we build strong bonds that transcend differences. Additionally, with branches around the world, our dojo offers the opportunity to train with members from other countries, whether by welcoming visiting students or being warmly received when traveling abroad. This vibrant and expansive community is a unique feature of our dojo, offering experiences beyond what everyday life can provide.

Feature4

A lifelong sport for all ages and genders

特徴4

When people hear the word 'martial arts,' some might associate it with being 'harsh' or 'grueling.' It's true that training can be extremely demanding, especially if the goal is to win competitions. However, the essence of karate lies in achieving mastery by using minimal strength and energy to neutralize an opponent with a single decisive move. For this reason, at our dojo, which strives to capture the true spirit of karate, anyone—regardless of age or background—can start practicing karate at any point in their life and continue for as long as they wish.

was looking for a place where I could continue practicing karate, which I started in middle school, as a working adult. The dedicated dojo with ample space and the friendly, knowledgeable black belt instructors who provide thorough guidance were the key factors in my decision to become a member.

What does SODJ mean to you?

"It’s a place where you can learn and practice karate in a theoretical and practical way." Instead of relying on vague instincts, we receive guidance on how to improve based on body mechanics and the laws of physics, which can be immediately applied in practice. Another highlight is the wide-ranging interaction among students. Regardless of age, whether a student or working professional, everyone trains together, from the young to the elderly.
